FAQs

What is the difference between white, red and black maca?

They are different root colours from the same plant, harvested and sorted by hue. White is the mildest in flavour and the most widely available, which is why we stock it. Red and black are rarer and taste stronger.

What does maca taste like and what hides it best?

Malty and slightly nutty, with an earthy finish. Cacao, banana, dates, cinnamon and nut butter all carry it well. In plain water it is noticeable.

Should I take maca in the morning or evening?

There is no established timing requirement. It works well in a morning smoothie or coffee. Start with a small amount, see how you find the taste and how it sits with you, and build from there.

Is raw or gelatinised maca better?

They suit different people. Ours is the raw milled root. Gelatinised maca has been heat-treated to remove some of the starch, which some people find easier to digest but which also processes the root further. If raw maca does not agree with you digestively, that is the usual reason people switch.

Can I bake or cook with it?

You can, though it is usually added to no-cook recipes, smoothies, energy balls, overnight oats, because prolonged high heat is generally avoided with raw powders. Stirring it into something warm rather than boiling is fine.

Where can I buy maca powder in Ireland?

Organic white maca powder is available from nuanaturals.com in 100g and 250g, delivered across Ireland. SuperValu and Holland & Barrett also carry the range, and the stockist list shows which shops are near you (range varies by store). If you use it daily the 250g works out better value per gram. We stock the white root, which is the mildest of the three maca colours.
